- Demonstrated ability to live and work in a small, isolated community.
- Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of natural resource management programs, particularly in relation to protected area management.
- Demonstrated project management skills including an ability to coordinate completion of tasks to a high standard, on time and within budget.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and as a member and supervisor of a team.
- Sound oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to liaise with Government and community groups at all levels, and ability to prepare professional technical reports and interpretative material.
- A demonstrated ability to implement Australian Government policies on workplace diversity, workplace participation and occupational health and safety as they apply in the workplace.

The Norfolk Island Ranger (Natural Resource Management) will:
- Hold a current drivers licence and be able to drive a manual vehicle.
- Have a level of fitness suited to outdoor manual work, often involving long distance walking in steep and rugged terrain.
- On occasions, be required to travel by vessel to, and camp on, Phillip Island to fulfill the duties of the position.
- Will hold, or be able to obtain, certificates of competency in the safe use of chemicals, chainsaw use, operation of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, first aid and other qualifications that are required to fulfill the requirements of the position.
- Wear uniform and other appropriate clothing.
- Meet requirements of the Australian Public Service Code of Conduct:
- Act with care and diligence
- Behave at all times in a way that upholds the integrity and good reputation of the Australian Public Service
- Behave honestly and with integrity
- Comply with all applicable Australian and Norfolk Island Law
- Comply with any lawful and reasonable direction given by someone in the employees Agency who has authority to give the direction
