Jobs in Sydney (NSW): Dean & Professor, Sydney Law School

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and enjoys a prestigious reputation locally and internationally. The Sydney Law School is one of its 16 faculties and is part of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. It was the first Law School to be established in Australia and has produced many of Australia’s most distinguished graduates and leaders of the profession. It is the 10th ranked law school in the QS World University Rankings and its legal research is ranked 4th amongst the top international law schools and 1st amongst Australian law schools in the Social Sciences Research Network. It currently has approximately 1700 LLB and JD students, 1500 postgraduate coursework students and 100 postgraduate research students.

Applications are invited for the position of Dean, which fell vacant following the appointment of Professor Gillian Triggs as President of the Australian Human Rights Commission. The Dean will provide leadership and support for the school’s teaching and research activities and will be responsible for its general management, including its staff, finances and physical resources.

To succeed you will be an outstanding scholar in the law who respects and understands the breadth of scholarly interests represented within the school and has the capacity to promote them. You will have a track record of extensive management experience, ideally within the higher education sector, and will have developed high level management skills, including the ability to effectively manage significant budgets and the full range of human resources matters. The capacity to think strategically and oversee strategy development and implementation is also required. In addition, you will be capable of providing leadership and vision, and be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and team building skills. It is also particularly important that you will have the capacity to develop strong and mutually beneficial relations with the profession and alumni.

The Dean is a member of the University’s Senior Executive Group (SEG), comprising the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, representatives of the 7 Divisions (including the Deans of the 16 Faculties) and senior general staff. The Dean must have the capacity to actively contribute to the work of SEG.

The initial appointment will be for 5 years with opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The successful applicant will also hold the title of Professor.

A salary package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position will be negotiated. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
