Do you want to provide a helping hand in supporting students with diverse learning needs?

Mindarie Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated Education Assistants (Special Needs) for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during Term 2 2012 and up to the end of Term 3, 2013. Placements can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within Term 2, 2012 up to the end of Term 3, 2013.

As an Education Assistant – Special Needs, you would work under general supervision and guidance to perform tasks that require limited discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes determined by the teacher. Through previous experience you would demonstrate techniques in working with children who have high behavioural, medical, intellectual and social needs. You will possess good written and oral communication skills which will help assist teachers and therapists when dealing with students.

Mindarie PS opened in 1997 and is located 40kms to the north west of Perth on the coastal strip. The school provides for 788 students from Kindergarten to Year 7. The school's curriculum has a strong focus on literacy and numeracy. Specialist programs operate in the following areas: Physical Education, Science, Music, Performing Arts, Library/ICT and Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) for academically talented students in Years 4-7. Students experiencing educational difficulties are catered for through Individual Education Plans (IEP).

The school has experienced and committed staff that work collaboratively to provide the best possible learning environment for students. Mindarie's facilities include 6 teaching blocks, library, 4 transportable classrooms, 5 Early Childhood classrooms, and a fully enclosed and carpeted assembly area.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and /or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
