Roy Hill is leading the development of a new generation of integrated iron ore mining, rail & port projects in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Construction has started on the state-of-the-art:

  • 55 Mtpa mine, processing plant, airport and permanent accommodation village.
  • 344 kilometre heavy haul railway linking the mine and port.
  • Port stockyard and two-berth export facility in Port Hedland.
  • Remote Operations Centre based in Perth.

The primary purpose of this is role is to lead the company's Health, Safety, Emergency and Security (HSES) functions and support management to develop a risk based proactive safety culture. As the HSES lead both during the construction phase and extending into operations - the role is responsible for ensuring Roy Hill meets legal/statutory requirements. In meeting this requirement the GM HSES shall be responsible for developing / implementing / improving / and managing HSES systems and practices as appropriate for a large mining and iron ore supply, project construction, start up and operation.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate the creation and maintenance of a behavioural based safety culture throughout construction of the Roy Hill Project, encompassing the Site Construction Contractors, PMC and their respective operations.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Health & Safety (H&S) strategies and plans to deliver continuous improvement in health & safety performance.
  • Develop and implement appropriate injury management strategies to enable the company to achieve quality case management outcomes.
  • Manage the development, documentation, communication, testing, and periodic review of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Develop and follow an audit plan for assessing HSES risks, and perform regular HSES audits, monitor compliance, perform risk and vulnerability assessments. Present audit findings to the CEO, Executive Management and the Board as required.
  • Mitigate risk by keeping the leadership team and board informed of HSES issues and developments in the industry or broader business environment which may affect the business.
  • Manage all statutory H&S reporting requirements.
  • Provide technical advice/support and coaching to the leadership team and play a key guidance role in influencing management to fulfil their health and safety accountabilities.
  • Oversee the implementation of security for all areas of the business.
  • Guide and manage the emergency management processes, resources and response for the business.
  • Ensure compliance with governmental obligations and maintenance of HSES documentation as required, by liaising with the relevant authorities to assist investigations of injury, property loss or damage, thefts and other serious incidents.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience in the implementation of Health & Safety systems and the application of health and safety legislation.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with the implementation of risk management processes.
  • At least ≥ 10 years' relevant experience gained within the mining and resources industry.
  • At least ≥ 5 years' experience operating at a senior management level.
  • Demonstrated capability to develop a strong behavioural based safety culture.
  • Experience in regulatory and major project development within a greenfields environment.
  • Experience with the implementation and management of emergency and security programs.
  • Tertiary qualifications in health, safety, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complexity in a rapidly changing business environment and to actively drive and facilitate change through innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstated ability and experience in greenfields project and operations.

You will be a senior, pragmatic health and safety professional possessing strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to positively influence at all levels within the business.
